C-19 Reflection #14: Maundy Thursday - Foot Washing
C 19 Reflections (#14)
Maundy Thursday
Theme: Foot washing
Scripture Reading: John 13:1-13 (Philippians 2:1-11)
Today’s Guided Scripture Reflection Exercise:
1. Read the text slowly twice in a row.
As you read, take note of the words, details, phrases or themes that jump out at you as you read.
After you have finished reading, take some time to reflect quietly on the things that you notice.
2. Some Christians believe that foot washing should be practiced at the same level of seriousness as communion and baptism. From the passage, find the expressions that seem to suggest Jesus’ seriousness about this practice for his followers.
3. What might be some objections to practicing foot washing? (* Notice that Peter objects!!)
4. How do you interpret Jesus’ teaching that he is setting an example for his disciples and that we will be blessed if we practice his example? What does that blessing look like?
5. Some people think that foot washing in the most beautiful, powerful service in the church year? Why?
6. What could be the advantage of foot washing to congregational relationships? In particular, what could be the effect of foot washing as the way to begin congregational meetings?
7. Read Philippians 2:4-11 in comparison with Jesus’ foot washing. What connections do you see?
8. This year, foot washing is not a thing and so we are given an opportunity to apply it beyond our actual practice at the church.
Reflect on the following quote for thinking about how foot washing speaks to our everyday living and service:
“Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love." - Gandalf
