Theme: “Developing a Rule of Life” (Part 2)
Scripture Reading: John 15:5
Reflection:
This is a follow through on yesterday’s reflection. Here is a sample or example of what a Rule of Life could look like. Notice that it includes various types and levels of disciplines and activities. It is also possible to design a communal Rule that a group of people agree to live out together. This is becoming more popular in local congregational settings.
- Take a 24hour Sabbath once a week
- Begin each day with Scripture and Prayer
(you can be more specific around time)
- Pray the Examen before going to sleep at Night (* You can find the Daily Examen Prayer in C~19 Reflection #53)
- Exercise 2-3x a week (or more if you prefer ie. Walk each day for 45 minutes)
- Complete my work-related activities by ______ each day.
- Fast once per month
- Spend focused time with my husband/wife, friend, family member or significant other on a daily/weekly basis
- Meet with a spiritual director or a spiritual friend once per month
- Take an annual personal spiritual retreat
- Commit to participating in the local church (define)
-Volunteer in a community based cause or project
- Participate in an international or intercultural experience every 2-3 years
A Final Word…
Adele Calhoun notes, “[a rule] must be written for who you are, not for who you aren’t. It addresses your world, your sphere of influence, your fears of loss of productivity, your relationships. It takes into account where you need to stretch and change as well as where you are tired and need balance.”
